Introduction

In Power BI, gateways are crucial components that ensure secure data transfer between on-premises data sources (databases, files, etc.) and cloud-based services. They enable seamless integration, real-time reporting, and scheduled refreshes for interactive dashboards while maintaining robust security.

Types of Gateways

  1. On-Premises Data Gateway:

    • It is ideal for connecting on-premises data sources to Power BI and other Microsoft cloud services.
    • Supports secure, real-time, or scheduled data transfer.
  2. Personal Gateway:

    • Designed for individual users in non-enterprise environments.
    • Limited features and only supports personal report updates.

Functions of Gateways

  • Data Refresh: Schedule or on-demand updates for reports.
  • Live Connection: Real-time data access for dashboards.
  • Security: Encrypted communication between on-premises sources and the cloud.

Key Notes

  • Local Files: Local Excel files and OneDrive-hosted files can be integrated into On-Premises-Only and Hybrid reports.
  • SharePoint: SharePoint does not require a gateway; validate credentials under the data source in Power BI.

Benefits of Using Gateways

  • Seamless Integration: Bridges on-premises systems with cloud services.
  • Data Security: Maintains secure, encrypted data transfers.
  • Scheduled Refresh: Automates data updates for consistent reporting.
