BPW stands for Business Performance Warehouse, which is Kemin's data warehouse. A data warehouse consolidates and integrates data from different systems and transforms the data to ensure consistencies between disparate system information. Kemin's BPW copies and integrates data from M3, KBL. iCIMS, Nemesis, Nexa, etc. This tutorial teaches you how to connect to BPW on Power BI Desktop.
BPW contains multiple databases such as Nemesis, M3FDBKMN, KBL, etc. Depending on your own needs, you should connect to one of the databases available on BPW. In this tutorial, we will be connecting to the Northwind database, which is a test database we published to the server for educational purposes. Northwind is a sample dataset developed by Microsoft that contains sales data from a fictitious company called Northwind.
Connecting to BPW
- On a new blank Power BI Desktop file, choose "SQL Server"
- Type bpw.kemin.com in the Server blank. Then type the name of the database you want to connect to in the Database (optional) blank. For this tutorial, it will be Northwind. If you want to connect to the datamarts, type BPW_Datamarts in the Database blank.
- Choose the tables needed in your report, then select Load or Transform Data depending on your next steps. After a few moments, you should see the tables you chose in the Fields pane (f you selected load) or the Queries pane (if you selected Transform Data).
Troubleshooting
A window may pop up and ask you for which credentials to use to access the database. Choose Use my current credentials, then select Connect.
You might be able to connect to your desired database successfully, or the following issues may occur.
Issue 1: Encryption Support
If a window asking you to use an unencrypted connection to connect to the data source, simply select Ok.
Issue 2: Credentials denied
If the following message appears after you click Connect, then contact IT ([email protected]) and ask them to check your credentials for the specific database you are trying to access.
