We often use Power BI Service to explore reports and dashboards so we can make data-supported business decisions. You might already notice that some features on Power BI Service are not available to you.

What you can do in Power BI Service depends on three things:

  1. Type of license and subscription you use
  2. Where the content is stored
  3. The roles and permissions you are assigned

Power BI Service Licenses

In this article, we will discuss the differences between each license type and how that can impact you. Power BI offers licenses for users and for the entire organization. There are three types of licenses for users: Free, Pro, and Premium per-user. It is possible to have more than one license at the time.

License type

Capabilities when workspace is in shared capacity

Additional capabilities when workspace is in Premium capacity

Power BI (free)

Access to content in My Workspace

Consume content shared with them

Power BI Pro

Publish content to other workspaces, share dashboards, subscribe to dashboards and reports, share with users who have a Pro license

Distribute content to users who have free licenses

Power BI Premium Per User

Publish content to other workspaces, share dashboards, subscribe to dashboards and reports, share with users who have a Premium Per User license

Distribute content to users who have free and Pro licenses

Power BI Premium per-capacity is an organizational capacity-based license. Using Premium per-capacity allows users with a free license in an organization to act on content in workspaces that are assigned to Premium capacity. Outside of Premium capacity, a user with a free license can only use the Power BI service to connect to data and create reports and dashboards in My Workspace. They can't share content with others or publish content to other workspaces.

Licenses used at Kemin

Kemin has the Premium per-capacity license, which means Kemin can publish content in premium capacity that allows users with free licenses to use all capabilities of Power BI Service. For per-user licenses, Kemin has Free users and Pro users.

Who qualifies for a Pro license at Kemin?

Since Kemin has a premium per-user license and most of the content is shared in premium capacity, users with free licenses will be able to have the full experience as pro license users. Therefore, most users only need a free license. Generally, those who are in leadership positions or those who need to share and upload reports regularly are qualified to obtain the pro license.

Requesting a Pro license

If you would like to have a pro license, you may email IT help desk (Help.Desk@Kemin.com) to submit a request, then the department will decide if you are qualified to have a pro license or not.
